My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Veronica “Ronni” Johnson, licensed practical nurse and aspiring writer, meets Violet in the assisted living facility where Violet requires no assistance, just lots of male attention. When she dies, she leaves Ronni a very generous bequest–only if Ronni completes a book about her life within one year.
Alternating chapters between Homecoming Queen Violet in 1947 and can’t-quite-find-her-crown Ronni in the present, IT ALL COMES BACK TO YOU is Southern Fiction at its hilarious, warm, sad, outrageous, uplifting, and stunning best.
I’ve jumped back onto the Contemporary Fiction novel bandwagon again for this one. Perhaps I just want to get my Netgalley feedback ratio up. Regardless, as I was sifting through available titles on the site I was intrigued by the synopsis on this novel and decided, “why not?” And after reading this gem, I may be starting to understand what all the fuss is about the genre.
The first page of the book had pretty much captured my attention to the point of no return, and although I had high hopes for the remainder, I was secretly waiting for the story to slow down and gradually have me begging to just be done with it. But the opposite happened: in fact, my mind didn’t wander from the book at all. I was completely drawn in.
The story follows Ronni and Violet, though not always at the same time. The perspectives alternate and are written so well. Each character introduced into the story adds something to the magic that is woven in and eventually tied into a neat little bow. And while many characters are slowly introduced throughout the book, you won’t have much trouble keeping track of each individual as they hold their own place quite well and add their own flair to the overall piece.
The story is powerful and deals with a multitude of issues like anger, resentment, the uncertainty of starting something new, and just letting go. I found both main characters, particularly Ronni, to be very relatable and easy to sympathize with. I’m so happy I picked this book up and would recommend it to anyone looking for a gripping novel that will keep you guessing about how it will all eventually play out. It may even have you asking yourself the timeless question, “what if?”
